Academy for Leadership in Local Governance
Local governments are increasingly asked to do more, often with fewer resources. Today’s elected and appointed local leaders must be well versed in a variety of skill sets and issue areas in order to respond effectively to the challenges of public management.
The Academy for Leadership in Local Governance is a unique professional development program designed to enhance the leadership skills of local elected officials, as well as appointed board and commission members of city and county governments. The program is designed to prepare city and county leaders for the opportunities and challenges of the 21st Century. The Missouri Municipal League (MML) and the Harry S Truman School of Public Affairs (TSPA) at the University of Missouri-Columbia jointly sponsor the program.
The Academy curriculum is highly interactive, utilizing real-life case studies, experiential exercises and up-to-date readings and materials. The Academy promotes the development of leadership skills and tools that allow participants to reflect on current beliefs and practices, share knowledge and experience, and practice strategies and processes designed to facilitate problem-solving and organizational development. The sessions are led by Truman School faculty and practitioners chosen for their expertise and experience in public sector issues and leadership training.
The Academy for Leadership in Local Governance 2006-2007 sessions feature:
- Understanding and Working with People (November 10 & 11, 2006)
- Developing Leadership Skills (January 5 & 6, 2007)
- Meeting the Challenges and Opportunities of the Future (March 16 & 17, 2007)
- Local Governance Policy Seminar (June 1 & 2, 2007)
