Graduate Certificate in Public Management

The Graduate Certificate in Public Management provides the administrative skills for ethical, effective leadership and management roles in the public service. Students completing this Graduate Certificate will be well positioned to begin or advance a public service career with many expecting to pursue management careers in state and local governments.

The Graduate Certificate in Public Management offers many benefits. Public management skills are essential for successful managerial careers in the public service. Our increasingly complex society and economy have created a need on the part of public employees for mastery of knowledge and skills on a higher level than ever before. Finally, one can find many avenues to make a difference within today’s public service.

Required courses

  • PA 8520: Human Resource Management and Development in the Public and Nonprofit Sector
  • PA 8720: Budgeting and Financial Management in the Public and Nonprofit Sector
  • Choose one of the following:
    • PA 8530: Strategic Management of Public Service Organizations: People, Information, and Money
    • PA 8540: Local Government Management
  • In addition, the student selects an additional elective course in consultation with the Truman School's Director of Graduate Studies. The course may come from the Truman School's other offerings or another MU graduate unit.
